Daily Rhythms: First Things First

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." - Colossians 1:15-17

He is the firstborn, so at the birth of each new day, think of Him first.

Before eyes are fully opened, before feet hit the ground running wild, learn to set heart and mind above where true Strength for the day lies.

Before the to-do list is taken up, and you are taken up with pages to read and papers to write and places to go and people to meet with and life to tackle, say good morning to your Life.

Your Way. Truth. Life.

Before you eat, drink, speak, open wide to Sustainer, drink deep of Grace, and whisper thank you to the Maker.

Skip this heartbeat, and days will run pale. We'll run, but we'll run empty.

And I know this from experience, and I've tasted the bitter of days, weeks, months started wrong, when the Firstborn was not first-borne on my lips, in my heart.

Even on hard mornings, when only the clock tells you it's day, because all is gloomy darkness outside, and almost before the whispered good morning coughing cracks your frame and hope sounds more like help! Even these days He recognizes hearts that fight to be upheld by Him, and He bears us in our weakness to be held together.

The image of invisible God strains to hear your dependent cry at every dawn, hand ready to uphold, grace waiting to sustain.

Think of Him first.
